Ingredients:
- 1 cup frozen or canned peas
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 cup milk (or more for desired consistency)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 2–4 slices of bread, toasted
- Optional: a pinch of nutmeg or a sprinkle of grated cheese
Instructions:
- Cook the peas:
- If using frozen peas, boil for 2–3 minutes until tender. Drain.
- If using canned peas, drain and rinse.
- Make the cream sauce:
- In a small saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
- Stir in flour to make a roux; cook 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly.
- Gradually whisk in milk until smooth.
- Cook for 3–5 minutes until thickened.
- Combine peas and sauce:
- Stir peas into the cream sauce.
- Season with salt, pepper, and optional nutmeg or cheese.
- Serve:
- Spoon creamed peas over hot toasted bread.
- Enjoy immediately!
Tips:
- Use thick, hearty bread for a more filling meal.
- Add sautéed onions or herbs for extra flavor.
- Adjust milk to make the sauce thinner or thicker according to your taste.
- Leftovers can be reheated gently on the stovetop, adding a splash of milk to loosen the sauce.
