Crispy Mozzarella Sticks with Marinara Sauce & Creamy Dip

Ingredients

For Mozzarella Sticks:

  • 12 mozzarella string cheese sticks (or a block cut into sticks)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 ½ cups breadcrumbs (Italian-style or plain with seasoning)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • Vegetable oil for frying

For Marinara Sauce:

  • 1 cup canned crushed tomatoes
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Fresh basil (optional)

For Creamy Dip:

  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • ¼ cup sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Chopped chives or parsley (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Cheese

  • Freeze mozzarella sticks for 1–2 hours until solid. This prevents them from melting too fast when frying.

Step 2: Set Up Breading Station

  • In three separate bowls:
    • Bowl 1: Flour
    • Bowl 2: Whisked eggs and milk
    • Bowl 3: Breadcrumbs mixed with garlic powder, paprika, and salt
  • Dip each frozen mozzarella stick in flour, then egg, then breadcrumbs.
  • For extra crunch, repeat the egg and breadcrumb steps once more (double coating).
  • Place coated sticks back in the freezer for 30 minutes.

Step 3: Fry the Mozzarella Sticks

  • Heat oil in a deep skillet (about 350°F / 175°C).
  • Fry a few sticks at a time until golden brown (about 1–2 minutes).
  • Drain on paper towels.

Step 4: Make Marinara Sauce

  • In a small saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat.
  • Sauté garlic for 30 seconds, then add crushed tomatoes, oregano, salt, and pepper.
  • Simmer for 10–15 minutes. Stir occasionally. Add fresh basil if desired.

Step 5: Make Creamy Dip

  • Mix mayo, sour cream, lemon juice, garlic powder, salt, and pepper in a bowl.
  • Add herbs if using. Chill before serving.

To Serve:

Serve the crispy mozzarella sticks hot with warm marinara sauce and the creamy dip on the side.
