These cheesy breadsticks are easy to make and perfect for appetizers, snacks, or alongside your favorite pasta dish. They’re crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and loaded with cheesy goodness.
Ingredients:
- For the Dough:
- 1 cup warm water (105-115°F)
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 3 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for dusting)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- For the Topping:
- 4 tablespoons melted butter
- 1-2 cloves garlic, minced (or 1 teaspoon garlic powder)
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (or a blend of mozzarella and parmesan)
- Optional: Sprinkle of red pepper flakes for heat
Instructions:
- Activate the Yeast: In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it sit for 5-10 minutes, or until foamy.
- Make the Dough: Add the flour, salt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Mix with a wooden spoon or a stand mixer with a dough hook until a shaggy dough forms.
- Knead the Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. If using a stand mixer, knead on medium-low speed for 5 minutes.
- First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Prepare the Topping: While the dough is rising, melt the butter in a small bowl. Stir in the minced garlic (or garlic powder), oregano, basil, and salt.
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Shape the Breadsticks: Once the dough has doubled, punch it down and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough in half. Roll each half into a rectangle, about 12×8 inches. Cut the dough into strips about 1 inch wide.
- Add the Topping: Place the breadsticks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush generously with the garlic butter mixture. Sprinkle evenly with the shredded cheese and optional red pepper flakes.
- Bake: Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Cool and Serve: Let the breadsticks cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm!
