Crispy Cheesy Breadsticks Recipe

These cheesy breadsticks are a perfect appetizer or side dish. They’re crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and loaded with melty cheese.

Ingredients:

  • For the Dough:
    • 1 cup warm water (105-115°F)
    • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
    • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
    • 2 1/2 to 3 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • For the Topping:
    • 4 tablespoons melted butter
    • 1-2 cloves garlic, minced (or 1 teaspoon garlic powder)
    • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
    • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (or a blend of mozzarella and cheddar)
    • Optional: Parmesan cheese, red pepper flakes, fresh parsley

Instructions:

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a large bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Make the Dough: Add the olive oil, salt, and 2 1/2 cups of flour to the yeast mixture. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Knead the Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 5-7 minutes, adding more flour as needed until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  4. First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Prepare the Topping: While the dough is rising, melt the butter and mix in the minced garlic (or garlic powder) and Italian seasoning.
  6. Preheat Oven: Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  7. Shape the Breadsticks: Once the dough has doubled, punch it down and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll or stretch the dough into a rectangle, approximately 12×16 inches.
  8. Add the Topping: Brush the melted garlic butter mixture evenly over the dough. Sprinkle the shredded cheese over the top.
  9. Cut and Bake: Cut the dough into strips about 1 inch wide. Carefully transfer the breadsticks to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, allowing a little space between each strip. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  10. Optional Garnish: Once baked, you can sprinkle with parmesan cheese, red pepper flakes, and fresh parsley, if desired.
  11. Serve: Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce, such as marinara or ranch.
