These homemade breadsticks are irresistibly crispy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside, and loaded with melted, gooey cheese. Perfect as an appetizer, side dish, or snack!
Ingredients:
- For the Dough:
- 1 cup warm water (105-115°F)
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2.5 – 3 cups all-purpose flour
- For the Topping:
- 1/2 cup melted butter
- 1-2 cloves garlic, minced (or 1 teaspoon garlic powder)
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (or a blend of mozzarella and cheddar)
- Optional: Parmesan cheese for sprinkling
Instructions:
- Activate the Yeast:
- In a large bowl, combine the warm water and sugar.
- Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it sit for 5-10 minutes, or until foamy.
- Make the Dough:
- Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil and the salt to the foamy yeast mixture.
- Gradually add the flour, 1/2 cup at a time, mixing with a wooden spoon or a dough hook on a stand mixer.
- Once the dough starts to come together, continue kneading on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. If using a stand mixer, knead for 5 minutes on medium speed.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Prepare the Topping:
- While the dough is rising, melt the butter in a small saucepan or microwave.
- Stir in the minced garlic (or garlic powder), oregano, basil, and salt.
- Shape the Breadsticks:
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Lightly grease a baking sheet.
- Once the dough has doubled, punch it down to release the air.
- Divide the dough in half.
- Roll each half into a rectangle.
- Cut the rectangles into strips about 1 inch wide.
- Place the strips onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between them.
- Add the Cheese and Bake:
- Brush the breadsticks generously with the garlic butter mixture.
- Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the breadsticks.
- Optional: lightly sprinkle parmesan cheese over the top of the mozzarella.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Serve:
- Let the breadsticks cool slightly before serving.
- Cut into smaller sections if desired.
- Serve warm with your favorite marinara sauce or dipping sauce.
Tips and Variations:
- For extra crispy breadsticks, brush with a little extra olive oil before baking.
- Add other toppings like pepperoni, cooked vegetables, or different cheeses.
- For a spicier version, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the garlic butter mixture.
- For a sweeter version, omit the garlic and herbs, and brush with butter and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar after baking.
Enjoy your delicious homemade crispy cheesy breadsticks!
