Ingredients

  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 1 cup (120g) all-purpose flour
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cups (480ml) whole milk
  • ½ cup (120g) unsalted butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour an 8-inch (20cm) square or round baking dish.
  2. In a mixing bowl, beat the eggs and sugar together until the mixture becomes light and fluffy.
  3. Add in the vanilla extract, then slowly stir in the flour until just combined—do not overmix.
  4. In a small saucepan, heat the milk and butter together until the butter melts. Do not boil. Let it cool for 2–3 minutes.
  5. Gradually pour the warm milk mixture into the batter, whisking continuously until smooth.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and bake for 35–40 minutes or until the top is golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Let the cake cool slightly. Serve warm or chilled, optionally dusted with powdered sugar or topped with fresh berries!
