Ingredients
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tbsp active dry yeast
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 cup warm water (110°F)
- 2 tbsp olive oil (plus more for brushing)
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp onion powder
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup mozzarella cheese (optional, for cheesy breadsticks)
- 1 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for topping)
- 1 tsp dried oregano (optional, for seasoning)
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- Mix the Dough:
- In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt together. Once the yeast mixture is ready, add it to the dry ingredients along with 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Stir to combine, and then knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, or until it’s smooth and elastic.
- Let the Dough Rise:
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm area for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
- Shape the Breadsticks:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air, then divide it into 12 equal portions. Roll each portion into a long breadstick shape and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Prepare the Topping:
- In a small bowl, mix together the garlic powder, onion powder, and Parmesan cheese. Brush the breadsticks with the melted butter and sprinkle the garlic and seasoning mix on top.
- Bake:
- Bake the breadsticks for 12-15 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
- Optional Cheesy Breadsticks:
- If you want cheesy breadsticks, sprinkle the mozzarella cheese over the breadsticks about 5 minutes before they finish baking, and return them to the oven until melted.
- Serve:
- Once the breadsticks are done, brush them with a little extra melted butter and sprinkle with oregano if desired. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce!
