Tiramisu is an Italian coffee-flavored dessert. It is made with ladyfingers dipped in coffee, layered with a mixture of mascarpone cheese, eggs, and sugar, and flavored with cocoa powder.
Ingredients:
- For the Ladyfingers:
- 28 ladyfingers
- For the Coffee:
- 1 cup strong brewed coffee
- 2 tablespoons brandy or rum (optional)
- For the Mascarpone Cream:
- 1 pound mascarpone cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 4 large egg yolks
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- Optional Garnishes:
- Cocoa powder
- Coffee beans
Instructions:
- Make the Coffee: In a shallow dish, combine the strong brewed coffee with the brandy or rum (if using).
- Prepare the Ladyfingers: Quickly dip each ladyfinger in the coffee mixture, turning to coat both sides. Arrange half of the ladyfingers in a single layer in the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Make the Mascarpone Cream: In a large bowl, beat the egg yolks and whole eggs with an electric mixer on high speed until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Gradually add the sugar, beating until thick and pale yellow.
- Combine Mascarpone: Reduce speed to low and gradually beat in the mascarpone cheese until smooth and creamy.
- Assemble the Tiramisu: Spread half of the mascarpone cream evenly over the layer of ladyfingers. Top with the remaining ladyfingers, then spread with the remaining cream.
- Chill: Cover the tiramisu with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.
- Serve: Before serving, dust the top of the tiramisu with cocoa powder. Garnish with coffee beans, if desired.
Tips & Variations:
- For a stronger coffee flavor: Use espresso instead of brewed coffee.
- For a lighter dessert: Use only egg yolks in the mascarpone cream.
- Add a touch of sweetness: Drizzle a thin layer of chocolate syrup over the top.
- Make it ahead: Tiramisu can be made up to 2 days in advance.
