Ingredients
For the Meat Filling:
- 1 lb ground lamb or beef
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 medium carrots, diced
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 cup beef broth
- 1 tsp fresh thyme (or 1/2 tsp dried)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
For the Mashed Potato Topping:
- 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/4 cup butter
- Salt, to taste
- Optional: 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese for topping
Instructions
- Prepare the Potatoes:
Boil potatoes in salted water until fork-tender (about 15–20 minutes). Drain, then mash with butter, milk, and salt. Set aside. - Cook the Meat Filling:
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook ground meat until browned. Add onion, garlic, and carrots. Cook until soft (about 5–7 minutes). Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, broth, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5–10 minutes. Add peas at the end and stir. - Assemble the Pie:
Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Spread the meat filling in a baking dish. Top with mashed potatoes and smooth with a spoon or fork. Sprinkle cheese on top, if using. - Bake:
Bake for 20–25 minutes or until golden and bubbly. For a crispy top, broil for the last 2–3 minutes. - Serve:
