Classic Patty Melt Sandwich

Description

The Classic Patty Melt is a beloved diner-style sandwich made with a juicy seasoned beef patty, sweet caramelized onions, and melted Swiss cheese, all layered between slices of buttery, toasted rye bread. Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, this comfort food favorite delivers rich, savory flavor in every bite.

Ingredients

  • 2 slices rye bread (or sourdough/white bread)
  • 1/3 lb (150 g) ground beef
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 slices Swiss cheese (or cheddar/provolone)
  • 1 tbsp butter (plus extra for toasting)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Optional: garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions
    • Heat butter in a skillet over medium-low heat.
    • Add sliced onions and cook for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden and soft.
    • Remove and set aside.
  2. Cook the Beef Patty
    • Shape ground beef into a thin patty slightly larger than the bread.
    • Season with salt and pepper.
    • Cook in the same skillet over medium heat for 3–4 minutes per side until fully cooked.
  3. Assemble the Sandwich
    • Butter one side of each bread slice.
    • Place one slice butter-side down in the skillet.
    • Add one slice of cheese, the beef patty, caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese.
    • Top with the second bread slice, butter-side up.
  4. Grill the Sandwich
    • Cook over medium-low heat for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown and the cheese is melted.
    • Press gently with a spatula for even browning.
  5. Serve
    • Remove from heat, slice in half, and serve hot.

Tips

  • Use low heat when caramelizing onions for the best sweetness.
  • Thin patties cook evenly and fit better in the sandwich.
  • Cover the skillet briefly while cooking to help melt the cheese faster.
  • Try adding a light spread of mustard or mayo for extra flavor.
  • Serve with fries, coleslaw, or pickles for a classic diner-style meal.
