The name “Mille-Feuille” means “a thousand layers,” referring to the flaky pastry texture. Each bite is light, creamy, and perfectly sweet. This elegant dessert is loved around the world for its rich flavor and beautiful layered look. It is perfect for special occasions, tea time, or family gatherings. With simple ingredients and a little patience, you can create this bakery-style dessert at home. Once chilled, the layers soften slightly and blend with the cream, creating an irresistible treat.
Ingredients:
For the Pastry Layers:
- 1 package puff pastry sheets (about 400–500 g)
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar (optional, for topping)
For the Custard Cream:
- 2 cups milk
- 4 egg yolks
- ½ cup sugar
- 3 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 cup whipped cream (optional for lighter cream)
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- Roll out the puff pastry sheets slightly and cut them into equal rectangles.
- Place them on the tray, prick with a fork to prevent too much puffing, and bake for 15–20 minutes until golden and crispy. Let them cool completely.
- For the custard, heat milk in a saucepan until warm but not boiling.
- In a bowl, whisk egg yolks, sugar, and cornstarch until smooth.
- Slowly pour the warm milk into the egg mixture while whisking continuously.
- Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook on medium heat, stirring until thick.
- Remove from heat, add butter and vanilla extract, and let the custard cool.
- Fold in whipped cream if using.
- Assemble the cake by layering puff pastry with custard cream. Repeat the layers.
- Finish with a pastry layer on top and dust with powdered sugar or crushed pastry crumbs.
- Refrigerate for 4–6 hours before serving so the layers soften slightly.
Tips:
- Always cool the pastry and custard completely before assembling.
- Use a sharp knife to cut clean slices.
- Refrigerating overnight makes the cake even softer and more flavorful.
- You can decorate the top with powdered sugar, chocolate drizzle, or crushed pastry crumbs.
- For extra flavor, add a little lemon zest or vanilla bean to the custard.
