Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • 1 ¾ cups (220g) all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup (65g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups (400g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup (240ml) whole milk
  • ½ cup (120ml) vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (240ml) boiling water

For the Chocolate Frosting:

  • 1 cup (230g) unsalted butter, softened
  • ½ cup (40g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 4 cups (500g) powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup (80ml) milk (plus more as needed)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

Make the Cake:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch (23 cm) round cake pans or line them with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another large bowl, whisk together the sugar, eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. Stir in the boiling water (batter will be thin). Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.
  6. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Make the Frosting:

  1. Beat the butter in a large bowl with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy.
  2. Add the cocoa powder and mix until combined. Gradually add the powdered sugar, alternating with the milk, beating until fluffy. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  3. Adjust the consistency with additional milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, if needed.

Assemble the Cake:

  1. Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a generous layer of frosting on top.
  2. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.
  3. Decorate as desired (e.g., with chocolate shavings, sprinkles, or fresh berries).

Enjoy your Classic Chocolate Cake with a glass of milk or a hot cup of coffee!
