Ingredients
For the Cake:
- 1 ¾ cups (220g) all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup (65g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 cups (400g) granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup (240ml) whole milk
- ½ cup (120ml) vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup (240ml) boiling water
For the Chocolate Frosting:
- 1 cup (230g) unsalted butter, softened
- ½ cup (40g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 4 cups (500g) powdered sugar
- 1/3 cup (80ml) milk (plus more as needed)
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Instructions
Make the Cake:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch (23 cm) round cake pans or line them with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In another large bowl, whisk together the sugar, eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
- Stir in the boiling water (batter will be thin). Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.
- Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Make the Frosting:
- Beat the butter in a large bowl with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy.
- Add the cocoa powder and mix until combined. Gradually add the powdered sugar, alternating with the milk, beating until fluffy. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Adjust the consistency with additional milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, if needed.
Assemble the Cake:
- Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a generous layer of frosting on top.
- Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.
- Decorate as desired (e.g., with chocolate shavings, sprinkles, or fresh berries).
Enjoy your Classic Chocolate Cake with a glass of milk or a hot cup of coffee!
