Classic Baked Potato Recipe

A simple, foolproof recipe for perfectly fluffy and flavorful baked potatoes.

Ingredients:

  • 4 medium russet potatoes
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (or vegetable oil)
  • 1 teaspoon coarse sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional toppings:
    • Butter
    • Sour cream
    • Shredded cheddar cheese
    • Bacon bits
    • Chives or green onions
    • Broccoli florets
    • Chili

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Prepare the potatoes:
    • Wash the potatoes thoroughly under cold running water.
    • Dry them completely with a clean towel.
    • Using a fork, pierce each potato several times. This allows steam to escape during baking, preventing the potatoes from bursting.
    • Rub each potato with olive oil, ensuring they are evenly coated.
    • Sprinkle the potatoes generously with coarse sea salt and black pepper, rubbing it into the skin.
  3. Bake the potatoes:
    • Place the potatoes directly on the oven rack or on a baking sheet.
    • Bake for 45-60 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork and the skin is crisp. The baking time will vary depending on the size of your potatoes.
  4. Check for doneness: To check if the potatoes are done, gently squeeze them. They should give easily. You can also insert a fork or knife; it should slide in easily.
  5. Serve:
    • Remove the potatoes from the oven and let them cool slightly.
    • Cut a slit in the top of each potato and gently squeeze the sides to fluff the inside.
    • Add your desired toppings and serve immediately.

Tips for Perfect Baked Potatoes:

  • Russet potatoes are ideal: They have a high starch content, which results in a fluffy interior.
  • Don’t skip the piercing: Piercing the potatoes is crucial to prevent them from exploding in the oven.
  • Use coarse salt: Coarse salt adheres better to the skin and provides a nice textural contrast.
  • Baking time varies: Adjust the baking time based on the size of your potatoes. Larger potatoes will require longer baking times.
  • Oven rack vs. baking sheet: Placing the potatoes directly on the oven rack allows for better air circulation and crispier skin. A baking sheet will also work, but the bottom skin might not be as crispy.
  • Hot oven: A 400°F (200°C) oven provides the right balance of cooking the interior and crisping the exterior.
