Classic Baked Potato Recipe

A simple and delicious way to bake a fluffy potato with crispy skin.

Ingredients:

  • 1 large russet potato per person (or another baking potato)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (or vegetable oil)
  • 1/2 teaspoon coarse sea salt (or kosher salt)
  • Optional: black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Prepare the Potatoes:
    • Wash the potatoes thoroughly under cold running water.
    • Dry them completely with a clean towel.
    • Using a fork, pierce the potatoes several times on all sides. This helps steam escape and prevents the potatoes from bursting.
  3. Oil and Season:
    • Rub each potato with olive oil, ensuring it’s coated evenly.  
    • Sprinkle generously with coarse sea salt, rubbing it into the skin. If desired, add black pepper, garlic powder, or onion powder.
  4. Bake:
    • Place the potatoes directly on the oven rack or on a baking sheet.
    • Bake for 45-60 minutes, or until the skin is crispy and a fork easily pierces the center of the potato. The baking time will vary depending on the size of the potatoes.  
  5. Check for Doneness:
    • To check if the potatoes are done, gently squeeze them. They should feel soft. You can also insert a fork or knife into the center; it should go in easily.
  6. Serve:
    • Remove the potatoes from the oven and let them cool slightly.
    • Cut a slit in the top of each potato and gently squeeze the sides to fluff the inside.
    • Serve immediately with your favorite toppings.

Optional Toppings:

  • Butter
  • Sour cream or Greek yogurt
  • Shredded cheese (cheddar, Monterey Jack, etc.)
  • Bacon bits
  • Chopped chives or green onions
  • Salsa
  • Chili
  • Broccoli and cheese.

Tips for Crispy Skin:

  • Ensure the potatoes are completely dry before oiling and salting.
  • Baking them directly on the oven rack allows for better air circulation, resulting in crispier skin.  
  • Do not wrap the potatoes in foil, this will steam them, and prevent crispy skin.
