Classic Baked Custard with Spiced Topping is a timeless dessert that combines the silky smoothness of custard with the warmth of aromatic spices. This dish is simple yet elegant, offering a creamy texture and a golden-brown finish that makes it both visually appealing and satisfying to eat. The custard is baked gently to achieve a delicate consistency, while a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg on top adds depth and fragrance. It is perfect for family gatherings, festive occasions, or as a comforting treat after dinner.
INGREDIENTS:
- 4 cups whole milk
- 6 large eggs
- ¾ cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- Ground cinnamon or nutmeg for topping
INSTRUCTION:
- Preheat the oven to 325°F (160°C).
- In a saucepan, warm the milk gently until just heated, not boiling.
- In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth.
- Slowly add the warm milk to the egg mixture, whisking constantly to prevent curdling.
- Pour the custard mixture into a glass baking dish or individual ramekins.
- Sprinkle the top with ground cinnamon or nutmeg.
- Place the dish in a larger baking pan and add hot water to the outer pan until it reaches halfway up the sides of the custard dish (water bath method).
- Bake for 45–60 minutes, or until the custard is set but still slightly wobbly in the center.
- Remove from oven and allow to cool. Serve warm or chilled.
SERVINGS: Serves 6–8 people.
NOTE:
- The water bath ensures even cooking and prevents the custard from cracking.
- Use fresh eggs for the best texture and flavor.
- Adjust sweetness by reducing or increasing sugar slightly.
- Custard can be served plain or with a drizzle of caramel sauce for added richness.
- Store leftovers in the refrigerator and consume within 2–3 days.
