Classic Apple Fritters Recipe

These classic apple fritters are a delightful treat, featuring tender pieces of apple encased in a sweet, fried batter and often drizzled with a sugary glaze. They’re perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a sweet snack.

Ingredients:

  • For the Fritters:
    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 2 teaspoons baking powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
    • 1 large egg
    • 1/2 cup milk
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 2 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and diced
    • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • For the Glaze (Optional):
    • 1 cup powdered sugar
    • 2-3 tablespoons milk
    • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Batter:
    • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and sugar.
    • In a separate bowl, whisk together egg, milk, and vanilla extract.
    • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
  2. Add Apples: Gently fold the diced apples into the batter.
  3. Heat the Oil: Heat about 2-3 inches of vegetable oil in a deep fryer or a large, heavy-bottomed pot over medium heat (350°F/175°C).
  4. Fry the Fritters: Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, about 2-3 at a time. Fry for 3-5 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  5. Drain and Cool: Remove the fried fritters with a slotted spoon and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Let them cool slightly.
  6. Prepare the Glaze (Optional):
    • In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Add more milk if needed to achieve a drizzling consistency.
  7. Glaze and Serve: Drizzle the glaze over the warm fritters and serve immediately.

Tips and Variations:

  • Apple Variety: You can use other apple varieties like Gala or Fuji, but Granny Smith or Honeycrisp hold their shape well during frying.
  • Spice Additions: Add a pinch of ground cloves or allspice to the batter for extra flavor.
  • Cinnamon Sugar: Instead of a glaze, you can toss the warm fritters in cinnamon sugar.
  • Raisins or Nuts: Add raisins or chopped nuts to the batter for added texture and flavor.
  • Make-Ahead: Apple fritters are best served fresh, but you can store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Reheat them slightly before serving.

Enjoy your delicious Apple Fritters!
