Chocolate Cake recipe

Ingredients

For the cake:

  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water

For the frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 4 tablespoons heavy cream (add more if needed)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans, or line with parchment paper.
  2. Mix dry ingredients:
In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk together.
  3. Add wet ingredients:
Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat on medium speed until well combined.
  4. Add boiling water:
Slowly stir in the boiling water — the batter will be thin, but that’s okay!
  5. Bake:
Divide batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cakes cool for 10 minutes, then remove from pans and cool completely.
  6. Make the frosting:
Beat softened butter until creamy. Add powdered sugar, cocoa powder, salt, and vanilla. Beat until smooth, adding heavy cream a tablespoon at a time until it reaches a fluffy, spreadable consistency.
  7. Assemble:
Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread frosting evenly on top. Add the second layer and frost the top and sides.
  8. Serve:
    Slice, serve, and enjoy!
