Chocolate Cake Recipe

This recipe yields a classic moist and flavorful chocolate cake.

Ingredients:

  • For the Cake:
    • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour  
    • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder  
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
    • 1 teaspoon salt  
    • 1 cup granulated sugar
    • 1 cup buttermilk
    • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 cup hot coffee (brewed)
  • For the Frosting (Optional):
    • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 3 cups powdered sugar
    • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
    • 1/4 cup milk
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Combine dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Combine wet ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together sugar, buttermilk, oil, vanilla extract, and hot coffee.
  4. Combine wet and dry ingredients: Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  5. Bake: Pour batter evenly into prepared pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Cool: Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting them onto wire racks to cool completely.  
  7. Make frosting (optional): In a large bowl, cream together butter until light and fluffy. Gradually add powdered sugar, cocoa powder, milk, and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth and creamy.
  8. Frost and serve: Once the cakes are completely cool, frost with chocolate frosting (if desired) and enjoy!
