Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions & Peppers Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450 g) beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce (optional for extra flavor)
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, minced
  • ¼ cup beef broth or water
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Sesame seeds & sliced green onions (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Marinate beef: In a bowl, combine sliced beef with soy sauce, oyster sauce, and cornstarch. Mix well and let it marinate for 15–20 minutes.
  2. Prepare vegetables: Slice onion and peppers into thin strips. Mince garlic and ginger.
  3. Cook beef: Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat. Add beef and stir-fry for 2–3 minutes until browned but not fully cooked. Remove and set aside.
  4. Cook veggies: Add remaining oil to the pan. Stir-fry onions, peppers, garlic, and ginger for 2–3 minutes until slightly softened.
  5. Combine & sauce: Return beef to the pan. Add beef broth (and rice vinegar if using). Stir-fry everything together for 1–2 minutes until sauce thickens and beef is cooked through.
  6. Season: Taste and adjust with salt, pepper, or extra soy sauce.
  7. Serve: Garnish with sesame seeds and green onions. Serve hot with steamed rice or noodles.

Would you like me to make it extra saucy (like a takeout-style pepper steak) or keep it light and dry (more like a stir-fry)?
