Chicken Gizzard Recipe

A simple and flavorful recipe for tender chicken gizzards, perfect as an appetizer or part of a hearty meal.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound chicken gizzards, cleaned
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth (or water)
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • Optional: Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Gizzards: Rinse the chicken gizzards under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels. If they have any tough membranes or connective tissue, trim them off.
  2. Sear the Gizzards: Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the gizzards and sear them on all sides until browned, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Sauté Aromatics: Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onion is softened and translucent, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Add Spices: Stir in the paprika, dried thyme, black pepper, and salt. Cook for another minute, allowing the spices to release their aroma.
  5. Braise the Gizzards: Pour in the chicken broth (or water) and the optional soy sauce. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the skillet and let the gizzards simmer for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until they are tender. Stir occasionally and add more liquid if needed.
  6. Check for Tenderness: To check if the gizzards are done, pierce them with a fork. They should be tender and easily pierced.
  7. Adjust Seasoning: Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning as needed. Add more salt, pepper, or other spices to your liking.
  8. Serve: Remove the gizzards from the skillet and transfer them to a serving plate. Spoon the sauce over the gizzards. Garnish with fresh parsley, if desired. Serve hot.
