Cheesy patty melt goodness

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices of your favorite melty cheese (like Swiss, American, or cheddar)
  • 4 slices of rye or sourdough bread
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • Optional: Thousand Island or mayo-mustard sauce for spreading

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions:
In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add sliced onions and cook until golden and soft, about 10-15 minutes. Set aside.
  2. Form & cook the patties:
Shape ground beef into thin, wide patties slightly larger than your bread slices. Season both sides with salt and pepper. In the same skillet, cook patties over medium-high heat until browned and cooked through, about 3–4 minutes per side. Set aside.
  3. Build your melt:
On one slice of bread, layer cheese, beef patty, caramelized onions, another slice of cheese, then top with the second slice of bread. Spread butter on the outside of each slice.
  4. Grill it up:
In a clean skillet or griddle, grill the sandwich over medium heat until golden brown and the cheese is melted, flipping once—about 3 minutes per side.
  5. Serve & devour:
Slice in half and serve hot with pickles or crispy fries on the side!
