Cheesy Mozzarella Onion Rings

Ingredients

  • 2 large onions
  • 200g mozzarella cheese block (or string cheese)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (panko preferred)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • 1 tsp paprika (optional)
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare the onions: Peel the onions and cut them into thick slices (about 1/2 inch). Carefully separate the slices into rings.
  2. Add cheese: Cut the mozzarella into strips. Take two onion rings (one slightly smaller than the other) and place the cheese strip in between them to form a ring filled with cheese. Repeat until all rings are filled.
  3. Freeze: Place the prepared rings on a tray and freeze for at least 30 minutes. This helps keep the cheese inside while frying.
  4. Set up dredging station: In one bowl, place the flour seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. In a second bowl, beat the eggs. In a third bowl, add the breadcrumbs.
  5. Coat the rings: Take each frozen ring, dip it in flour, then egg, then breadcrumbs. For an extra crispy coating, dip back into egg and breadcrumbs once more.
  6. Fry: Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C). Fry the rings in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2–3 minutes per side.
  7. Drain: Remove and place on a paper towel to drain excess oil.
  8. Serve: Enjoy immediately with your favorite dipping sauce!
