Ingredients
- 2 large onions
- 200g mozzarella cheese block (or string cheese)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup breadcrumbs (panko preferred)
- 1 tsp garlic powder (optional)
- 1 tsp paprika (optional)
- Salt & pepper to taste
- Oil for frying
Instructions
- Prepare the onions: Peel the onions and cut them into thick slices (about 1/2 inch). Carefully separate the slices into rings.
- Add cheese: Cut the mozzarella into strips. Take two onion rings (one slightly smaller than the other) and place the cheese strip in between them to form a ring filled with cheese. Repeat until all rings are filled.
- Freeze: Place the prepared rings on a tray and freeze for at least 30 minutes. This helps keep the cheese inside while frying.
- Set up dredging station: In one bowl, place the flour seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. In a second bowl, beat the eggs. In a third bowl, add the breadcrumbs.
- Coat the rings: Take each frozen ring, dip it in flour, then egg, then breadcrumbs. For an extra crispy coating, dip back into egg and breadcrumbs once more.
- Fry: Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C). Fry the rings in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2–3 minutes per side.
- Drain: Remove and place on a paper towel to drain excess oil.
- Serve: Enjoy immediately with your favorite dipping sauce!
