Ingredients:
- 1 (14-ounce) package Kraft caramels (about 48 caramels)
- 1/3 cup water
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups quick-cooking oats
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 cup melted margarine
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 (6-ounce) package semi-sweet chocolate chips
Instructions:
- Melt the caramels: Heat caramels and water over low heat, stirring often until caramels are melted and smooth. Set aside.
- Prepare the crust: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, melted margarine, baking soda, and salt. Reserve 1 cup of the mixture for the topping.
- Press the crust: Press the remaining crust mixture into an ungreased 9×13-inch baking pan.
- Bake the crust: Bake for 10 minutes.
- Add toppings: Sprinkle chocolate chips over the baked crust. Drizzle with the melted caramel mixture. Sprinkle with the reserved 1 cup of crust mixture.
- Bake again: Bake for an additional 5-7 minutes, or until the chocolate is melted and the topping is lightly browned.
- Cool and cut: Let cool completely before cutting into bars.
Tips:
- For a richer flavor, use butter instead of margarine.
- You can add other ingredients to the crust, such as chopped nuts or coconut flakes.
- To make the bars more chewy, add a few extra drops of water to the caramel mixture.
