Ingredients:
For the Crust:
- 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- ¼ cup ice water
For the Filling:
- 6 large Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
- ½ cup packed light brown sugar
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
For the Crumble Topping:
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup packed light brown sugar
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ cup (½ stick) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
Instructions:
Make the Crust:
- Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.
- Cut in Butter: Add the cold butter cubes to the flour mixture and cut in with a pastry blender or two knives until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add Water: Gradually add the ice water, tossing with a fork until the dough just comes together.
- Form Disks: Divide the dough into two disks, wrap each in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 30 minutes.
Prepare the Filling:
- Combine Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, brown sugar, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Toss to coat.
Assemble the Pie:
- Roll Out Dough: Roll out one disk of dough on a lightly floured surface to a 12-inch circle. Transfer to a 9-inch pie plate.
- Add Filling: Pour the apple filling into the pie crust.
- Dot with Butter: Dot the top of the filling with the 3 tablespoons of butter.
- Make Crumble Topping: In a medium bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Top the Pie: Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple filling.
- Roll Out Top Crust: Roll out the remaining disk of dough to a 12-inch circle. Cut slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
- Cover the Pie: Place the top crust over the filling and crimp the edges to seal.
- Brush with Egg Wash: Brush the top crust with a beaten egg for a golden brown finish.
Bake the Pie:
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake: Place the pie on a baking sheet and bake for 50-60 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
Serve:
- Cool: Let the pie cool completely before slicing and serving.
- Enjoy: Serve warm or cold with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Tips:
- For a shortcut, use a store-bought pie crust.
- Adjust the sweetness of the filling to your preference.
- You can use different apple varieties for a variety of flavors.
- For a more intense caramel flavor, drizzle caramel sauce over the cooled pie.
