Buttermilk Biscuits

These soft, flaky buttermilk biscuits are a classic comfort food. Perfect for breakfast or served as a side, they have a light and fluffy texture with a rich buttery flavor. Serve with jam, honey, or gravy for an indulgent treat.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 3/4 cup cold buttermilk (plus extra for brushing)
  • 1 tablespoon honey (optional for a touch of sweetness)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Cut in the Butter: Add the cold, cubed butter into the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Add Buttermilk: Slowly pour the cold buttermilk (and honey if using) into the mixture, stirring just until the dough comes together. Be careful not to overmix.
  5. Form the Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently pat or roll it to about 1/2 inch thick. Fold the dough over itself a few times for extra flakiness.
  6. Cut the Biscuits: Use a biscuit cutter or the rim of a glass to cut out the biscuits. Place them on the prepared baking sheet, close together for softer edges, or spaced apart for crispier sides.
  7. Brush with Buttermilk: Lightly brush the tops with extra buttermilk for a golden finish.
  8. Bake: Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the tops are golden brown.
  9. Serve: Allow to cool slightly before serving with your favorite toppings.
