Big Apple Fritters Recipe

Big apple fritters are a deep-fried pastry packed with fresh apples and warm spices, coated in a sweet glaze. This homemade version tastes just like the bakery-style ones – maybe even better!

🍏 Ingredients:

For the Fritters:

  • 2 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled and diced
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¾ cup whole milk
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

For the Glaze:

  • 1½ cups powdered sugar
  • 2–3 tbsp milk
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

👨‍🍳 Instructions:

  1. Prep the Apples:
    • Peel and dice apples into small chunks.
    • Optionally, sauté in a pan with 1 tbsp butter and a pinch of cinnamon for 2–3 minutes for softer apples.
  2. Make the Batter:
    • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
    • In another bowl, whisk eggs, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
    • Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
    • Fold in the diced apples. The batter will be thick and chunky.
  3. Fry the Fritters:
    • In a deep skillet or pot, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
    • Carefully drop heaping spoonfuls (¼ cup or ice cream scoop size) of batter into the hot oil.
    • Fry 2–3 fritters at a time, turning occasionally, for 3–4 minutes or until deep golden brown.
    • Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
  4. Make the Glaze:
    • Mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a bowl until smooth.
    • Dip warm fritters into the glaze or drizzle over the top.
  5. Cool & Serve:
    • Let glaze set for a few minutes.
    • Serve warm or at room temperature.

🍽️ Serving:

  • Makes about 8–10 large fritters.
  • Best enjoyed fresh, but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.

🔥 Tips:

  • For extra flavor, add a splash of apple cider to the glaze.
  • Don’t overcrowd the pan – it can lower the oil temperature and make the fritters greasy.
  • You can add a touch of lemon zest to brighten the flavor.
