Best Butter Cookies

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract (or almond extract for a twist)
  • 2¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Optional: coarse sugar or sprinkles for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy (about 2–3 minutes).
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, mixing just until combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Scoop out tablespoons of dough and roll into balls. Place them on the baking sheet about 2 inches apart. Flatten gently with the bottom of a glass or your fingers.
  7. Optional: Sprinkle with coarse sugar or festive sprinkles before baking.
  8. Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the edges are just lightly golden. The centers will still be pale — don’t overbake!
  9. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

These cookies are rich, buttery, and melt-in-your-mouth tender. Perfect for holidays, gifting, or everyday treats!
