Ingredients:
- For the Pastry:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/2 cup cold water
- For the Filling (optional):
- 1 cup cheese (cheddar, feta, or your choice)
- 1 cup cooked vegetables (spinach, mushrooms, or mixed vegetables)
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt together.
- Add the cold cubed butter and rub it into the flour with your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add the cold water, mixing until the dough comes together. Do not overwork the dough.
- Roll and Fold:
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and roll it into a rectangle about 1/2 inch thick.
- Fold the dough into thirds (like a letter) and then roll it out again into a rectangle. Repeat this process 3-4 times to create layers.
- Chill the Dough:
- Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- Preheat the Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Prepare the Filling:
- If using a filling, mix your chosen ingredients in a bowl, seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.
- Assemble:
- On a floured surface, roll out the pastry to your desired thickness.
- Cut into squares or circles, depending on your preference.
- Place a spoonful of the filling in the center of each piece, then fold and seal the edges with a fork or your fingers.
- Egg Wash:
- Beat the egg and brush it over the tops of the pastries for a golden finish.
- Bake:
- Place the pastries on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and puffed up.
- Cool and Serve:
