Apple Upside-Down Tart using just 2 apples

Ingredients

  • 2 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work well)
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 sheet puff pastry (store-bought, thawed)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash, optional)
  • A pinch of salt
  • Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream (for serving, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples.
  3. In an oven-safe skillet (preferably 8–9 inches), melt the butter over medium heat. Add brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and salt. Stir until bubbly and syrupy (about 2–3 minutes).
  4. Arrange the apple slices neatly in the skillet on top of the caramel in a circular or spiral pattern.
  5. Carefully lay the puff pastry sheet over the apples, tucking the edges slightly inside the pan.
  6. Optional: Beat the egg and brush the pastry top for golden color.
  7. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden.
  8. Remove from oven and let sit for 5 minutes. Then place a plate over the pan and carefully invert to flip the tart upside down.
  9. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, if desired.
