Apple Dumplings Recipe

These classic apple dumplings are a comforting dessert, featuring sweet, juicy apples wrapped in a soft dough and baked to golden perfection.

Ingredients:

For the dough:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • 1/2 cup milk

For the filling:

  • 3 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work well)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon butter, cut into small pieces

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the dough: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add the milk, stirring until the dough comes together.  
  2. Roll out the dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
  3. Prepare the filling: Peel and core the apples. Cut each apple into wedges. In a bowl, combine the granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract.
  4. Assemble the dumplings: Place a spoonful of the sugar mixture in the center of each apple wedge. Place a piece of butter on top.
  5. Wrap the dumplings: Cut the dough into squares. Place an apple wedge in the center of each square. Bring the corners of the dough together and pinch to seal.
  6. Bake the dumplings: Place the dumplings on a greased baking sheet. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown.
  7. Serve: Serve the warm apple dumplings with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce.
