- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ½ cup sour cream or plain yogurt
- 2 cups peeled and chopped apples (e.g., Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
- ¼ cup brown sugar (for topping)
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon (for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round or square baking pan.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each. Mix in vanilla extract.
- Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with sour cream. Mix until just combined.
- Gently fold in chopped apples.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
- In a small bowl, mix brown sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle evenly over the batter.
- Bake for 40–45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let cool before slicing. Enjoy warm or at room temperature.
