Ingredients
- 2 cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
- ⅔ cup white sugar
- 1½ tablespoons active dry yeast
- 1½ teaspoons salt
- ¼ cup vegetable oil
- 6 cups bread flour
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water. Stir in the yeast and let it sit for about 5–10 minutes, until it becomes frothy.
- Add salt and vegetable oil to the yeast mixture. Gradually mix in the flour, one cup at a time.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 8–10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl. Cover with a clean towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough, divide it in half, and shape into loaves. Place each loaf into a greased 9×5 inch loaf pan.
- Cover and let rise again for about 30–40 minutes, or until dough has risen about 1 inch above the pans.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake loaves for 30 minutes, or until tops are golden brown and loaves sound hollow when tapped.
- Optional: Brush tops with melted butter for a softer crust.
- Let cool slightly before slicing. Enjoy warm or toasted!
