Amish White Bread recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • ⅔ cup white sugar
  • 1½ tablespoons active dry yeast
  • 1½ teaspoons salt
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • 6 cups bread flour

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water. Stir in the yeast and let it sit for about 5–10 minutes, until it becomes frothy.
  2. Add salt and vegetable oil to the yeast mixture. Gradually mix in the flour, one cup at a time.
  3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 8–10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl. Cover with a clean towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough, divide it in half, and shape into loaves. Place each loaf into a greased 9×5 inch loaf pan.
  6. Cover and let rise again for about 30–40 minutes, or until dough has risen about 1 inch above the pans.
  7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake loaves for 30 minutes, or until tops are golden brown and loaves sound hollow when tapped.
  8. Optional: Brush tops with melted butter for a softer crust.
  9. Let cool slightly before slicing. Enjoy warm or toasted!
