This Air Fryer Blooming Onion is a crispy and flavorful twist on the classic restaurant favorite. It’s coated in a seasoned batter and air-fried to perfection without the excess oil, making it a healthier alternative that still delivers that satisfying crunch!
Ingredients
- 1 large yellow onion
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 cup breadcrumbs (panko for extra crunch)
- Cooking spray (olive oil or your choice)
Instructions
- Prepare the Onion:
- Cut the top of the onion and peel off the outer layer.
- Place the onion cut-side down, and make several cuts from the root to the top, stopping about 1/2 inch from the root to keep the onion together. Make about 12-16 cuts to form the “petals.”
- Open the Onion:
- Gently spread the layers of the onion to create the blooming effect. You may need to use your fingers to separate the petals slightly.
- Make the Batter:
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and pepper.
- In a separate bowl, whisk eggs and milk.
- Coat the Onion:
- Dip the onion into the flour mixture, making sure to coat all the petals. Shake off any excess.
- Next, dip the floured onion into the egg mixture, ensuring it gets into all the layers.
- Return the onion to the flour mixture for a second coat, then dip into breadcrumbs for a final crispy layer.
- Preheat the Air Fryer:
- Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 3 minutes.
- Air Fry the Onion:
- Spray the onion generously with cooking spray. Place it in the air fryer basket, making sure it’s in a single layer.
- Cook at 375°F (190°C) for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Check halfway through cooking and spray with additional oil if needed.
- Serve:
- Carefully remove the onion from the air fryer and let it cool slightly.
- Serve with your favorite dipping sauce like ranch or a zesty aioli.
