Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef or lamb
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 cups mashed potatoes (prepared ahead)
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
  • 2 tbsp butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, cook ground meat until browned. Drain excess fat.
  3. Add onions and carrots; sauté for 5 minutes until softened.
  4. Stir in tomato paste and flour, cooking for 1 minute.
  5. Pour in broth and Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and pepper. Simmer until thickened, about 5–7 minutes.
  6. Spread meat mixture into a baking dish.
  7. Top evenly with mashed potatoes. Dot with butter and sprinkle cheese on top if using.
  8. Bake for 25–30 minutes or until golden and bubbling.
  9. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
