Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F / 43°C)
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
- 1/4 teaspoon salt (optional)
- Butter or oil for greasing (optional)
Instructions
- Activate the Yeast:
In a small bowl, mix the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy. - Mix the Dough:
In a large bowl, add the flour and salt (if using). Make a well in the center and add the egg and activated yeast mixture. Stir until a dough forms. - Knead the Dough:
Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add a bit of flour if it’s too sticky. - Let It Rise:
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size. - Shape and Rest:
Once risen, punch down the dough and shape it as desired (small rolls, braids, twists, etc.). Place on a lined or greased baking tray and let them rest for another 15–20 minutes. - Cook or Bake:
- To bake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 15–20 minutes until golden.
- To pan-fry: Heat a bit of oil or butter in a pan over medium-low heat and cook each piece for 2–3 minutes on each side until golden brown and cooked through.
- Serve Warm:
Enjoy them fresh with a sprinkle of powdered sugar, a pat of butter, or even filled with jam or chocolate!
